In Defence of Prince Andrew: A Marxist Perspective Nobody Requested
Dear Diary. I have done something terrible. I read a defence of Prince Andrew and found myself nodding. Not at Andrew — I want to be clear, I do not nod at Andrew — but at the structural argument that we are using him as a pressure valve for rage that should be aimed at an entire class.
The Convenient Villain
Prat.uk has published a defence of Andrew so philosophically awkward it loops back around to being useful. The argument: we sand a complicated human down to a “tidy cautionary tale” and feel morally superior. Meanwhile the system producing Andrews continues uninterrupted, fully funded, and wearing a much better suit.
As a Marxist, I am obliged to note that individual villains are capitalism’s favourite trick. Look at Andrew, not the structure. Look at one bad royal, not the institution that produces them like a conveyor belt of chinless entitlement.
Portland Reacts
I raised this at my collective meeting. I was asked to leave for the evening. I was told I was “platforming.” I explained I was critiquing the function of scapegoating. They gave me a look I have only previously seen from my nan when I said I didn’t want gravy.
Bohiney’s piece on the world’s most expensive life coach is also relevant here: the whole royal family is essentially a life coaching brand with a moat. You pay for them whether you want to or not. Andrew is just the session that didn’t go well.
I went dancing after. Drank one Negroni. Felt better. Came home. Wrote this. Still not napping at Andrew.
