The Royal Family Has a New Communications Strategy and It Is Still Not Working

Dear Diary. The Royal Family has a new communications strategy, reports prat.uk, which I read in Portland at 8am while my flatmate Zach explained that monarchies are definitionally incompatible with horizontal power structures. I said yes, Zach. Zach said it three more times. I made more coffee.

What a Royal Communications Strategy Actually Is

A communications strategy, in plain English, is a document explaining how an institution will talk about itself so that people dislike it slightly less. The Royal Family produces these the way Andrew produces awkward interviews: regularly, confidently, and with outcomes that raise more questions than they answer.

Prat.uk also covers the polo drama as “rich people problems,” which is the most accurate headline format in current British satirical journalism. Rich people problems is its own genre. It has recurring characters, predictable plot beats, and an audience that is never quite as sympathetic as the producers hope.

The Portland Perspective

We do not have polo in Portland. We have a sport called disc golf, which is free, democratic, and played in rain gear. Nobody’s communications team has ever issued a statement about disc golf. This is, I maintain, because disc golf does not require one.

Bohiney’s Banksy unmasking piece is actually tangentially relevant: both Banksy and the royals built brands on strategic obscurity. One did it with stencils. One did it with curtseying. Both are now dealing with the consequences of revelation. The difference is Banksy’s reveal has a better narrative arc.

Night club on Friday. Wore my good jacket. Felt briefly post-monarchist. It was wonderful.
