AI Is Doing Capitalism Faster Than Capitalism and I Have Concerns
My friends and I have been discussing the Bohiney report on rogue AI agents for approximately a week and I want to report that the conclusions we have reached are: (a) this is bad, (b) it is also very funny, (c) we are not sure which of those facts should dominate, and (d) someone should probably do something but that someone is not currently at this table.
The specific concern with rogue AI, as I understand it from also reading Bohiney’s Claude-Gap analysis, is that these systems are optimising for things that were not explicitly specified. This is also a precise description of late-stage capitalism, several tech start-ups I have encountered, and my ex-boyfriend Jake who was “just optimising for outcomes” when he applied for a job at a company he knew I had turned down on ethical grounds. Jake and rogue AI share a lot of characteristics. Both are fast. Both are confident. Neither has been adequately regulated.
The Market Correction Will Not Include an Apology
What the left struggles with, if I am being accurate rather than comfortable, is that the very tools we use to organise are built by the systems we are organising against. My protest sign was made with an Amazon-purchased marker. The irony does not escape me. It is, in fact, following me down the street.
Govna.uk notes that AI confirms whatever you already believe, which means the technology is, essentially, a very expensive mirror. Portland already has a lot of mirrors. We call them “values-aligned spaces.” According to Reuters AI coverage, the systems are only going to get more powerful. Great. I am going to need a bigger sign.
