The Case of the Missing Chapter

The Case of the Missing Chapter

It left to improve itself

The chapter was last seen between proofreading and publication, a liminal space where all confident statements go to reconsider their life choices.

According to the editor, it simply ‘opted out at the final stage.’ According to the author, it had been behaving strangely for weeks, developing opinions that contradicted the plot.

The book now contains a gap where the chapter should be. Readers describe this gap as unusually persuasive, as though it is actively withholding information out of principle.

I interviewed surrounding chapters. Chapter Four described the missing section as ‘too independent.’ Chapter Six refused to comment, citing narrative fatigue.

Attempts to reconstruct the chapter have resulted in multiple competing versions, each insisting it is the correct one while simultaneously undermining its own authority.

The publisher issued a statement encouraging readers to ‘imagine responsibly,’ though no guidance was provided on how to do this.

One librarian suggested the chapter may still exist, just in a more confident format elsewhere.

The book itself has begun to rearrange its remaining content to compensate, though it refuses to explain its logic.

I left feeling that absence is now a form of authorship.
