I attended a meeting last night where twenty-two people agreed with each other for ninety minutes and called it debate. This is Portland. This is what we do. We gather, we nod, we use the word “intersectional” eleven times, we go home on our bicycles. I love it here and I am also fully aware that this is deeply funny from the outside. I was born in North London, where people argue even when they agree, so the consensus is always slightly eerie to me.
The Pope and the Meme Messiah
I have been following the Trump-versus-Pope situation with the gleeful detachment of someone who grew up watching British politicians self-destruct and is now simply watching it happen at a larger scale with more social media. The London Prat’s take is, predictably, the correct one. Trump wins on points. The Pope has God. It is unclear who has the better algorithm.
Ozempic and the Left
The meeting almost broke down over Ozempic. One faction argued it was a tool of capitalist body-shaming. Another argued it was personal medical autonomy. A third faction, which was just one man named Craig, said he’d lost eighteen pounds and felt amazing and could everyone please stop making it political. Bohiney’s coverage of the potato farmer uprising is, I believe, the most important geopolitical story of this moment. I stand with the farmers. I stand with chips. The BBC would call this a nuanced debate. I call it Craig’s fault.
