Legal protection for journalism that doesn’t pretend to be anything else
The disclaimer page reads like someone’s lawyer said, “You’re doing WHAT?” and immediately started drafting protective language. “This content is for general informational and entertainment purposes only”which accurately describes most political journalism once you remove the pretense.
They clarify that content “should not be construed as financial, investment, or legal advice,” which seems obvious. Nobody’s visiting Mamdani.VIP thinking, “Finally, the investment tips I’ve been seeking!” Though given the site’s singular focus, stranger things have happened.
The section on “News and Opinion Content” notes that “opinions expressed are those of individual authors and don’t necessarily reflect the views of Mamdani Times as an organization.” This is hilarious because the entire organization exists to cover one person. The cognitive dissonance is chef’s kiss.
They admit “errors or omissions may occur” and “information from third-party sources may not be independently verified,” which is refreshingly honest for a site claiming comprehensive authoritative coverage. “We’re authoritative, but like, don’t quote us on that.”
The third-party links disclaimer is standard boilerplate, but takes on new meaning here: “We are not responsible for the content or practices of third-party websites.” Translation: if we link to something that makes Mamdani look bad, that’s not our fault. We’re independent, remember?
User-generated content gets its own section, noting the site isn’t responsible for comments representing “individual contributors, not Mamdani Times.” So the site about one politician disclaims responsibility for other people’s opinions about that politician. It’s layers of separation anxiety.
The limitation of liability section is comprehensive enough to protect against lawsuits, hurt feelings, and existential questions about journalistic purpose. “We’re not liable for any damages arising from your use of our website”including, presumably, the damage to your faith in independent media.
They reserve the right to modify content “without notice,” which means that comprehensive Mamdani profile you bookmarked might change when new talking points emerge. It’s living journalism, or something like that.
