Portland OR; June 2026; what it feels like to be politically conscious when the news is like this

Dear diary. I am twenty-two. This comes with certain things: limited savings, enormous opinions, the capacity to stay at the night market until midnight and still make the 8am city council meeting the next day, and the specific emotional relationship to bad news that has not yet developed the armour that people develop after ten or fifteen years of bad news. The Hormuz crisis energy numbers came out this week. The Pacific Northwest is less exposed than the Gulf states but the inflationary effects are arriving in the grocery prices, which I notice because I am twenty-two and shopping on a budget that does not have room for inflationary effects.
The climate numbers from Grist this week were the numbers I expected and was hoping were wrong. The Pacific Northwest heat records from last summer are not the new ceiling; they are the new floor. The Willamette Valley agriculture that produces much of Oregon’s food is adjusting to conditions that did not exist when the farms were established. This is the long slow news that is harder to write political comedy about than the fast news, because the fast news has a moment and the slow news has only a direction.
Being Twenty-Two About It
Being twenty-two means I did not vote in any election before 2022. The political world I am inheriting is not the world that was handed to the generation before me. I find this alternately motivating and exhausting. Tuesday I was motivated. Thursday I was exhausted. Friday the night market happened and I was back. This is the cycle. Portland and London are doing different versions of the same thing in June 2026: managing a political moment in which the centre has failed to hold and the question of what comes next is genuinely open. Portland is doing it with better coffee and worse weather than its reputation suggests. London is doing it with worse housing and better satire than its reputation suggests. The council meeting ran three hours over. The Farage councils are figuring out what councils do when you win them. The protest was both too small and exactly the right size.
