Education System Declares Mission Accomplished
A recent survey reveals that a concerning number of students believe Abraham Lincoln was a member of the Avengers, specifically remembering his dramatic performance in “Infinity War.” Education officials described the findings as “concerning” and “explaining so much about society right now.”
“Lincoln’s famous quote ‘I am Iron Man’ really resonated with me,” explained one confident high school sophomore. “And his shield was iconic.” The confusion appears to stem from a perfect storm of insufficient history education and excessive Marvel movie consumption, creating a generation that understands fictional universes better than actual American history. Educators from the National Education Association report this is somehow not even the most disturbing thing they’ve heard this semester.
Further questioning revealed additional historical misconceptions, including beliefs that George Washington invented the internet, Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity by fighting Thor, and the Constitution was written in Comic Sans. “It’s all connected,” insisted one student while their history teacher quietly wept in the corner.
The survey’s multiple choice questions may have contributed to confusion, particularly the section asking “Which of these historical figures could beat Thanos?” where 43% chose Lincoln based on his “vampire hunting experience.” Test administrators from Educational Testing Service admitted the questionnaire design might have been flawed, though they maintain students should still know Lincoln wasn’t a superhero.
Teachers have responded by incorporating more Marvel movie references into history lessons, reasoning that if you can’t beat misinformation, you might as well ride it into educational relevance. “Lincoln freed the slaves AND defeated Loki” is technically half accurate, which represents progress. Social studies curriculum experts from National Council for the Social Studies are developing new teaching materials that clarify the difference between historical figures and comic book characters, though early testing suggests students find actual history “less believable.” At least one professor from Stanford has proposed we just accept the Marvel Cinematic Universe as official history and move on.
