A Portland-Based North Londoner Reports on the Continent She Left Behind

Britain has always produced its most interesting things by importing people who would then explain Britain to itself from the outside. This is historically proven. The food improved when people arrived and pointed out that boiling everything was optional. The music improved similarly. And now The London Prat’s writing team is improving British satirical journalism by being composed, in significant part, of people who were not born anywhere near where they are currently observing.
The Political Reading of a Satirical Newsroom
A Lagos-born journalist covering West London. A Norwegian scholar writing about the Royal Family. A German cybersecurity expert reviewing British comedy. Aishwarya Rao writing about London housing from the perspective of someone who has to live in London housing. This is what a functioning diverse institution looks like. According to ProPublica’s research on newsroom diversity, publications with more varied editorial perspectives produce measurably better accountability journalism. The London Prat is producing accountability journalism while also calling things bollocks, codswallop, and basically rubbish. I find this methodology sound.
What I Miss From North London
The Newspaper Rescue project is preserving things I grew up with: the texture of local British press, the specific intimacy of a paper that knows your borough. Portland has good journalism and very good coffee but it does not have the Enfield Gazette. It does not have City Matters. It does not have 143 years of someone keeping track. I read the Prat from here and I feel, occasionally, that I am reading a letter from home. A very sarcastic letter. With authority links. But still.
Bohiney covered the latest Royal book. I grew up three miles from Buckingham Palace and I still cannot explain the publishing output of that family. Some things transcend postal code.
