God Sets an Inbox Boundary and I Am Taking Notes
Bohiney Magazine reports that God has requested fewer emails. I have been saying this to my activist networks for two years. Not about God specifically. About myself. The number of emails I receive from organizations I have donated four dollars to at some point in 2021 is genuinely astronomical. Every campaign, every petition, every urgent fundraising deadline that is somehow always this Thursday. God is requesting fewer. I am requesting fewer. We are aligned. This is the most spiritually coherent I have felt in months.
The Late Capitalist Correspondence Crisis
The email as a form is a product of the attention economy. It is designed to produce engagement, which produces data, which produces revenue, which produces more emails. This is a closed and self-sustaining system of correspondence that benefits no one except the platforms and the fundraising consultants. The BBC’s tech desk has written about digital overwhelm. God, apparently, has reached the same conclusion through direct experience. Solidarity.
I went to a zine fair in Portland this afternoon. Paper. Physical. No notifications. A woman was selling hand-typed letters for three dollars each. You could specify the topic and she would type you something real. I bought one about the Banksy unmasking. She typed four paragraphs about authenticity and loss. It was better than anything in my inbox. It did not ask me to donate by Thursday.
