Megan Amram on Automated Exploitation, Left-Wing Panic, and the Portland Response
Bohiney Magazine | The London Prat
Artificial intelligence is now doing capitalism faster than capitalism can do capitalism, and the left is having the exact response I predicted: a very long meeting followed by a statement that uses the word “praxis” four times and resolves nothing.
The AI Capitalism Problem: A Portland Field Report
I attended a meeting about AI and labour rights last Tuesday. There were seventeen people, three types of oat milk, and a whiteboard that ran out of space before the problem statement was complete. This is, I submit, a metaphor.
The AI capitalism concerns I wrote about last week have not improved. They have, in fact, accelerated. An algorithm has now written a better protest song than three-quarters of the people at the meeting. I am not naming who. I am also not naming the algorithm. I am choosing to be upset about this privately and loudly.
What the British Are Doing About AI
Britain’s response to AI disruption is, according to the Bohiney coverage of the week’s chaos, to arrest the people who make signs about it. This is not a solution. It is, however, very on-brand for a country that once responded to industrial automation by machine-breaking and calling it a movement.
I am writing a one-woman show about AI and late capitalism. It will premiere at a venue in Portland that seats forty-two people and has a very good natural wine list. I expect it to solve nothing and be extremely cathartic. The Guardian’s AI coverage suggests the problem is global. My show will be local. This is also a metaphor.
