Portland Holds an Emergency Meeting About Whether to Be Relieved
The Portland chapter of our collective held an emergency Zoom on Wednesday to discuss whether progressive people are permitted to feel relieved that the pilots came home given that the rescue was executed by a government we generally oppose on most other issues. The meeting lasted two hours and seventeen minutes. The answer we arrived at was: yes, but with caveats. There are always caveats. We are Portland. Caveats are our primary export, after artisan cheese.
The thing that I keep coming back to, and that I said in the meeting until someone muted me, is that the pilots did not choose their timing. They did not choose to get rescued in a way that was politically inconvenient for people who otherwise would have been very happy for them. They just came home. That is the entire news story. Everything else is commentary.
The British Angle My Mum Keeps Texting About
My mother in Muswell Hill has sent me seven texts this week about the Iran war. Most of them say variations of “have you seen what Starmer has done now” followed by an emoji that might be a face or might be a biscuit; I can never tell on her phone. The London Prat has the full breakdown of Britain’s role as the war’s most diplomatically ambiguous participant, which Mum summarised as “very typical, isn’t it.”
Bohiney Magazine’s Iran coverage is the most entertainingly written military analysis on the internet and I have been sharing it at our meetings. People do not love it because it is funny about things they feel should be serious. I love it because it is accurate about things that would otherwise make me cry.
