Portland Marxists Are Very Confused About the Pilot Rescue
I attended three separate community meetings this week about the Iran pilot rescue and whether celebrating it constitutes complicity in imperialism. Meeting one: decisive, lasting ninety minutes, no conclusion. Meeting two: lasted two hours, produced a strongly worded statement that was immediately revised. Meeting three: someone brought kombucha and it all got quite emotional.
The thing is, and I say this as someone who has attended enough progressive meetings to have strong opinions about facilitation techniques: pilots came home. Alive. I have tried very hard to find the ideological problem with this and the best I can do is “the rescue was conducted by people we have complicated feelings about,” which is technically true but also somewhat beside the point.
Meanwhile, Britain Is Basically a Carrier Group With a Parliament
The London Prat has excellent coverage of Britain hosting American bombers whilst officially doing nothing of the sort. Back in North London we would have called this “having it both ways,” usually in reference to someone at a pub who wanted the credit for a round they did not buy. Britain bought the round. Britain is claiming it merely opened the fridge.
Bohiney Magazine reports that Trump won again and Democrats are furious, a sentence that has appeared so many times in the past two years it should simply be printed on a rubber stamp and applied to each Monday morning automatically.
I called my mum in Muswell Hill. She said she is glad the pilots are home and could I stop going to so many meetings. Mum, from a distance of 5,000 miles, remains the clearest thinker in my life.
