I woke up, made coffee, and read that potato farmers have declared war on Ozempic. My first thought was: finally, a class conflict I can visualise. My second thought was: I have no potatoes. My third thought was: this is what late capitalism looks like a pharmaceutical company and an agricultural sector fighting over who gets to control the British relationship with chips.
What Marx Would Have Said About GLP-1 Inhibitors
Marx wrote about the means of production. He did not specifically write about semaglutide suppressing appetite for the foods that the working class can actually afford. But I think we can extrapolate. The Guardian’s obesity coverage notes that Ozempic is disproportionately available to those with money, which is to say: the ruling class is injecting away its appetite while the rest of us manage with willpower and jacket potatoes.
The potato farmers are, in this reading, structurally correct even if they do not know it.
I also read The London Prat on Trump and NATO. I went to the club. I did twenty minutes on the dialectics of drug-suppressed hunger versus agricultural subsidy. Two people laughed. One of them was a farmer. I am calling that a victory of historical materialism.
