Britain Arrested 3,000 Sign-Holders and I Am Radicalised

Megan Amram processes the UK anti-protest crackdown from her Portland kitchen

I grew up in North London. I know what a placard looks like. It is a piece of card on a stick. It is not a weapon. It is not a threat. It is, at most, a mild inconvenience to people walking past it quickly. And yet Britain has apparently arrested three thousand people for holding them, which is staggering.

The Facts As Reported

According to Bohiney Magazine’s investigation, Britain arrested 3,000 of its own citizens for holding signs under counter-terrorism legislation while 197,000 people crossed the Channel in rubber dinghies. The country that invented parliamentary democracy has found its threat and it is A4 laminated.

The London Prat notes that Britain has officially classified sign-holding as terrorism and nobody seems embarrassed. I am embarrassed. From Portland, Oregon, where we consider free expression a minimum standard not a privilege withdrawn upon inconvenience.

What I Did About It

I made a sign. It says: This Sign Is Not a Weapon Unless You Roll It Up. I stood in my kitchen and held it. It felt important. Amnesty International UK is doing the serious legal work on protest rights with considerably more precision than I can muster at 9am over oat milk. But the feeling is the same: something is wrong and a sign about it is not terrorism.
