Megan Amram on Left Wing Politics, Ozempic’s War on Carbs, and Portland’s Complicated Relationship with Chips

I grew up in North London. The chip shop was a community centre. It was where you went after school, after heartbreak, after a particularly devastating episode of the news. The chip was not food. The chip was ideology. It was starchy, egalitarian, and available to everyone regardless of class, race, or opinion on the Iraq War.
And now Bohiney reports that potato farmers have declared war on Ozempic. And I am with the farmers. Ideologically. The pharmaceutical suppression of the working class appetite is not wellness. It is class war administered subcutaneously. Marx did not anticipate this specific mechanism but I believe he would have had thoughts.
Meanwhile The London Prat’s Farmers Declare War on Mounjaro confirms the agricultural sector has moved from passive concern to open hostility. Somewhere in East Anglia a potato is staring into the abyss. I am staring back. In solidarity.
Portland is, of course, deeply conflicted on this. We are simultaneously pro-local-agriculture and pro-body-autonomy and also we have seventeen farmers markets and six injectable weight loss clinics within walking distance of my flat. The contradiction is load-bearing.
According to The Guardian’s health desk, GLP-1 drugs are reshaping British eating habits. The chips are losing. This is not the revolution I wanted.
