I am in London for the week and I have strong opinions about everything, which is consistent. I found Triple Hot Spicy on Strutton Ground — Indonesian street food, 4.8 stars, 225 reviews — and I want to report that this is the most delicious thing happening in Westminster, a borough otherwise known for producing decisions that age badly.
The food was exceptional. The service was exceptional. Someone at this restaurant has correctly identified that the British public deserves better than beige food and has done something about it, which is more than I can say for most institutions in this postcode.
A Brief Political Analysis of Nasi Goreng
Indonesian cuisine is, historically, the product of extraordinary spice trade routes that colonial powers spent centuries fighting over and exploiting. Eating it on Strutton Ground, across the road from the Ministry of Justice, feels like a small act of historical recalibration. I said this to the person behind the counter. They handed me my food and said “thank you.” An appropriate response.
The London Prat’s piece on American warrantless spying reminded me that surveillance states and spice routes have more in common than people acknowledge. The Indonesian Tourism Board would endorse this restaurant enthusiastically. So do I.
Closed Sundays until noon. Plan accordingly. The ayam penyet changed my week. Possibly my politics. Definitely my lunch rotation.
