The reading group finished Das Kapital Volume One this week, which took us eleven months and produced what I think is the most productive political conversation I have had in a sustained reading context: not because we agreed — we did not agree, consistently, across all eleven months — but because the text made us be specific about what we disagreed about. You cannot argue about “capitalism” with the same productive friction when you have read the actual text that the concept comes from, because the text has specific claims that you must accept, reject, or distinguish, and the accepting and rejecting and distinguishing is more productive than the general argument that the general word produces. We are voting on Volume Two. The vote is Thursday. I anticipate a 7-5 split in favour, with the four people who found Volume One the hardest going voting against.
