A 22-year-old activist’s thoughts on maintaining hope
I’m exhausted. I’m politically exhausted. I’m personally exhausted. I’m exhausted by trying to care about things that nobody else seems to care about. I’m exhausted by the knowledge that everything’s getting worse and we can’t seem to stop it.
But I can’t stop trying because the alternative is to give up and then I’d just be a person working a meaningless job in a meaningless world. At least if I’m trying, at least if I’m fighting, I can feel like I’m doing something.
Looking at activist burnout discussions, everyone’s at their limit. Everyone’s tired. Everyone’s wondering if it’s all pointless. The difference is most people just give up. I’m still trying not to.
I go to nightclubs and I drink and I have sex and I try to remember what it feels like to just exist without the weight of the world on my shoulders. Sometimes it works. Mostly it doesn’t.
But I’ll keep trying because I don’t know what else to do. I’ll keep going to protests even though it won’t matter. I’ll keep caring even though it hurts. Because the alternative is worse.
