Megan’s Diary: Politics, Sex, and the Left-Wing Dream in Portland

A Marxist activist’s thoughts on desire and resistance

I went to a protest yesterday for housing rights. Three hundred people. Police with riot gear. The speeches were fiery and angry and absolutely nothing is going to change because we don’t have the political power to force it. But at least we showed up. At least we tried.

That’s what leftism is now. Showing up and trying and knowing it won’t matter because the system is designed to absorb all opposition and turn it into content. They’ll film the protest. They’ll write about it. They’ll use it to justify more surveillance. And nothing will change.

But I still believe somehow. Even though I’m twenty-two and I’ve already had this conversation with myself a hundred times. I still think maybe this time it’ll be different. Maybe enough people will wake up. Maybe the revolution will actually happen.

I was reading the political analysis this morning and saw the usual arguments about reform versus revolution. About whether we should work within the system or burn it down. It’s the same debate we’ve been having for decades and nobody’s winning.

So I go out at night and I have sex with people and I try not to think too hard about whether personal pleasure is compatible with political commitment. Because if I think too hard about it, I’ll probably explode.
