I grew up in North London. I moved to Portland. I vote for candidates who cannot win. This is called consistency. This week a More in Common poll put Labour at twenty-one percent. Third place. Behind the Tories at twenty-six and Reform at twenty-five. I read this while eating breakfast and had to put down my oat milk latte and sit very still for several minutes.
The Left-Wing Analysis Portion
The thing about Keir Starmer is that he is not actually a socialist and nobody should be surprised by any of this. He won a supermajority on forty percent of the vote because people were desperate. He then raised National Insurance, cut pensioners’ winter fuel payments, and agreed to charge British patients more for medicine in exchange for a trade deal with a man who applies tariffs to allies for sport. This is called centrism and it is very funny to everyone except the people it affects.
Farage criticised Trump’s tariffs this week, comparing them to the Liz Truss mini-Budget. The Guardian covered this with the bewildered tone of a person who walked into a room and cannot remember why. I understand the feeling.
What Portland Thinks
People here think Britain is quaint and funny. I tell them it is. The London Prat’s coverage of an initiative to restore confidence in initiatives genuinely helped explain the country I grew up in. I miss the chip shops. I do not miss the initiatives.
