I spend my days writing about revolution and my nights dancing in a neighborhood that’s literally the revolutioncapital’s revolution, constantly displacing working class people and replacing them with higher-income derivatives. I’m not part of the solution. I’m part of the problem’s entertainment system.
This is what class consciousness feels like: painful clarity about your own complicity. I’ve got left-wing politics and disposable income. I speak about workers while earning middle-class salary. I’m basically a revolutionary mascot for people who think feeling bad about inequality is the same as changing it.
What The Nightclub Reveals About Capital
Nightclubs are miniature capitalist ecosystems. You pay for entry (capital gate), purchase drinks at markup (profit extraction), dance to algorithmically optimized music (attention capture), and leave having exchanged time and money for dopamine hits. It’s commodity fetishism with a beat. BBC coverage treats clubbing as entertainment. Marx would treat it as a case study.
The funny part? I go anyway. Because even revolutionaries need to dance. Even Marxists need human connection. And on a Friday night, I’m not solving class problemsI’m temporarily escaping them through expensive drinks and expensive people.
Guardian coverage of inequality is thorough but doesn’t capture the lived absurdity of being a leftist in accelerated capitalism. You’re theoretically opposed to the system you’re materially embedded in, so you make jokes about it instead.
